Resources for gardeners

Honest Communications, a specialist garden and home PR agency, social media management, content creation and communications agency

Being right in the midst of National Gardening Week, and with a well reported rise in interest in gardening since this time last year, we thought it was a good time to have a bit of a round up of some of the fantastic resources that our clients have to help fellow gardeners, old and new – from books to blogs and podcasts, our clients have it all!

Plant Based Podcast

The Plant Based Podcast launched in 2019 and went to the top of the iTunes hobbies chart within 24 hours. Since launching, it regularly features in the top 10 in the charts, and has recently hit the number one spot in the Home & Garden chart.

Episode content goes beyond “what to do in the garden now” and instead meets people with a true passion for celebrating plants, with subjects ranging from foraging for medicinal plants and baking with edible flowers, to plant-based body builders and clothes made from bamboo… Guests have included Liz Earle MBE, Chris Packham CBE, the founder of allplants, a vegan bodybuilder and BBC Gardeners’ World presenter, Mark Lane.

Sponsored by garden machinery specialists, Cobra, season four kicked off with a celebration of independent nurseries and continues with special guests discussing everything from orchids to the beauty of Japanese gardening.

Ellen Mary Gardening

As well as being a co-host on the Plant Based Podcast, Ellen Mary is a gardener, author and horticultural broadcaster who lives and breathes everything to do with plants and how they can improve quality of life. Earlier this year she launched a wellbeing studio on her website, which is jampacked full of resources for people, plants and positive wellbeing. Visitors to the virtual studio will find inspirational stories on a range of topics including gardening for wellbeing, how to better appreciate nature walks and how to use herbs and plants for good health, all contributed by passionate experts in the field. There is also a ‘products’ section, where people can meet the sellers of exceptional, hand-picked items and receive exclusive discounts.

27 May also sees the launch of Ellen’s new book, The Joy of Gardening: The Everyday Zen of Mowing the Lawn, available to pre-order now. The book looks at the slow pleasures of gardening and how they are an age-old tonic for the soul, with chapters focusing on subjects such as understanding soil, how to sow seeds and how to encourage wildlife into the garden.

She Grows Veg

Couture jewellery designer turned gardening influencer, Lucy Hutchings, better known as She Grows Veg on Instagram, can now add horticultural author to her list of successes, with the launch of her first book, ‘Get Up & Grow’, which is launched on 29 April. Published by Hardie Grant, ‘Get Up & Grow’ uses Lucy’s background as a designer to illustrate how inspiring growing your own food can be. With 19 herb, vegetable and fruit growing projects for both indoors and outdoors, to show the myriad diverse and beautiful ways in which food can be grown, even in small spaces.
